Student Work Samples
Student Work Sample Guidelines for K- 5 Students
It is important that HTA stays compliant with distance learning regulations in regards to student work samples and assignment sheets as well as Board of Education and Charter School Review Panel requirements. Here are the guidelines for student work samples for the school year:
During each of the quarterly Face to Face meetings, your teacher will collect one work sample from each of the subject areas assigned on the assignment sheet given to your child at the previous Face to Face meeting.
Note: Language Arts, Phonics, Language Skills, Literature, Spelling count as one subject, so the student only needs one sample from any of the sub-areas in Language Art.
What is your teacher looking for in each work sample?
Your child’s work samples should be a representative sample of their learning and work completed in K12 Curriculum during the quarter. Their samples do not need to be perfect, but they should be something which they are proud of completing. Your teacher can only accept original copies, so please submit something you and your child do not wish to be returned. It has to be something that was assigned and completed during the quarter.
In order to help your teacher document the work samples and to allow them more time to spend with you and your child on instructional matters, we ask that you write the following information on the front page of each of your child’s work samples. Please have your child write their name on any additional pages as well.
Parent/Student provide (upper left-hand corner preferred):
- Student First and Last Name
- Date Sample Completed
- Unit # and Lesson #
While your teacher can accept a variety of assignments as work samples there are certain activities which make better work samples than others.
General Review Guidelines for Work Samples
Math: Where possible look for samples in which your child “shows his or her work”.
LA or Phonics: Look for samples that demonstrate your child’s ability to read/write.
Literature: Look for samples that demonstrate that your child understands the work he/she read in their lessons. This is a great place for your child to concentrate on writing sentences, paragraphs and short essays.
Language Skills (GUM, Analogies, Vocabulary and Composition): Improving student writing is one of HTA’s school-wide goals. Composition is the preferred work sample in this area…although you can turn in a GUM, Analogies, or Spelling sample if needed.
History and Science: While you can find many assignments that focus on the details, and these can be very good, History and Science offer students several opportunities to write. These assignments make good work samples as they help to show that your child understands the “bigger” picture. History and Science journals can be used as work samples.
Art: Please bring to your face to face meeting a favorite art sample completed during the quarter. Your teacher will document the sample on the work record form and allow you to take it home. This means you can show your teacher the fun sculptures or larger projects your child has completed.
Music: Music samples can be tough to come by in some music courses. Your child can demonstrate a song or explain a concept they learned in Music. If your child is choosing to demonstrate a song or explain a concept, please let your teacher know ahead of time which Unit and Lesson the student has selected so they will know what to evaluate.
PE Logs: Your teacher will need to collect a PE Log that has been signed and dated by the Parent and Student. The Physical Education component includes standards based benchmarks as well as recess activities. The following is the recommended time requirements:
Grades K-3 > 145 min. per week
Grades 4-5 > 155 min. per week
Grades 6-12 > 300 min. per week
